Surfing Hermosa Beach

Surfers have been enjoying Hermosa Beach waves for decades. The waves break right and left on the beach over a sandy bottom. Through the summer the beach is crowded, but the best waves show up in the fall and winter.

International Surf Festival

July 31 - August 4, 2024
Every year Manhattan Beach host the International Surf Festival. The event is a combined effort of surrounding beach communities from Torrance to Manhattan Beach. It draws large crowds to compete in the surf and bodysurfing contests, a paddleboard race, a beach run, beach volleyball, lifeguard competitions, a sand castle contest, a dory race, and more. The festival promotes fitness for participants from ages 8 and through seniors and benefits the South Bay Lifeguard Service.

Hermosa Beach Pier

The 1328-foot-long Hermosa Beach Pier is popular with anglers, sightseers, and those who just want to enjoy the fresh breeze and salty air. There are no buildings on the pier. The lifeguard headquarters, the Surfers' Walks of Fame monument, and restrooms are situated on shore at the foot of the pier. The pier has benches and fish cleaning stations. The pier is open from 6:00 AM to 10:00 PM.

Surfer's Walk of Fame

Each year the City of Hermosa Beach holds a Surfers Walk of Fame Induction Ceremony to commemorate the newly chosen inductees. Each inducted surfer is acknowledged by the placement of their name engraved on bronze plaques embedded along the pier. The names of over 50 honored members are displayed here. A bronze statue of a surfing Tim Kelly marks the location. Kelly was a popular Junior Lifeguard instructor who was killed at a young age in 1964 in a car accident.

  • No pets or alcohol allowed.
  • No overhead or sidearm casting.

Fishing off Hermosa Beach Pier

A sandy bottom and mussel encrusted pilings attract a variety of fish. Beyond the pier, about 650 feet, is an artificial reef which draws more fish. Among the catches along the middle of the pier are corbina, white croaker, surfperch, jacksmelt, opaleye. Off the end fishermen pull in California halibut, rays, sharks, bonito, and white seabass.

Volleyball

Hermosa Beach takes its volleyball seriously. 71 volleyball courts are set out along the beach, about half north of the pier and half south. They are open for public use. The City of Hermosa Beach maintains about 23 of the nets while the rest are maintained by the users. The city's courts fall under the Challenge Rule:

Volleyball Challenges

A "challenge" is defined as a small game of volleyball, to be agreed upon by both parties, for the purpose of deciding who can continue to play on the court, regardless of who was there first. Closed foursomes (e.g. two teams not accepting challenges) are allowable only when concluded before 10 a.m. or when there are no other players waiting for the court, regardless of whether vacant courts are available. After 10 a.m., all courts are designated challenge courts if there are any players waiting to play, regardless of court availability. An individual or a team may call challenges.

Ocean Safety

California State Parks and Recreation cautions that "large surf, cold water temperatures, backwash, sudden drop-offs, pounding shorebreak, and dangerous rip currents can turn what seem like safe activities such as playing near the surf line, wading, or climbing on rock outcroppings, deadly."
